Version log
What changed in the handbook, release by release, newest first.
In brief
- Versions use CalVer,
YYYY.0M.MICRO: the year, the zero-padded month, and a counter that starts at 0 each month (2026.09.0,2026.09.1,2026.10.0). - A release is a day of meaningful reader-facing change, not every edit. Typo fixes and tooling work are folded into the next release.
- The current version is shown in the More menu and in the home page footer.
Unreleased
Not yet versioned. These changes are in the working copy and will ship in the next release.
Headline: the whole handbook as a download, and versioned releases.
- The full handbook can be downloaded as one HTML page, a PDF or an EPUB from the More menu.
- A reading progress bar shows how far through a page you are, and long pages end with a Back to top link.
- Releases now carry a CalVer version, recorded on this page.
- The numbered handbook is now the only structure. The older audience pages (For Supporters, For Members, For Organizers and their guides) have been retired; their content lives in the numbered chapters and appendices, and old links redirect to the new pages.
2026.10.0
2026-10-02: the numbered staff handbook begins, and pages are easier to read and search.
- A numbered handbook now sits beside the existing guides, starting with the Introduction, which explains the purpose of the handbook and how to read it.
- DNA opens with the strategy chapter and the organizing cycle.
- Staff pages set out expectations for individual contributors, DRIs and player-coaches, plus department-specific guidance.
- Reference materials hold the canonical expectation rubrics and the tech team meeting agenda. Staff pages reuse the rubric text, so it is written once and stays consistent.
- Navigation is generated from one ordered contents list, so numbering and menus stay in step.
- A redesigned reading experience: navigation fits at every screen width, the home page has one set of audience cards plus a large search box, and each page shows one status badge, a summary panel, clearer headings and quieter section numbers.
- Search ranks titles and headings higher, headings have copy-link buttons, a missing page shows a helpful 404, and pages print cleanly.

- The home page and sidebar are reorganized around those three paths.
- The glossary, Find anything page, reading list and participation guide were tightened and cross-linked.

2026.09.1
2026-09-28: easier to find things.
- The sidebar is regrouped by subject, and a new Find anything page routes common questions to the page that answers them.
- The home page routes readers by subject, with the most-sought pages linked directly.
- Page titles now make sense out of context, for example in search results.
- Gaps found in testing were closed: how to propose a project, project authority, metric terminology, chapters and the theory of change.
- Newcomers are pointed to gatherings as a first step.

2026.09.0
2026-09-27: the first unified handbook.
- The movement guide and the Fellowship guide are combined into one handbook with a shared look matching sapiensfirst.org.
- Pages and sections were renamed to a consistent scheme, and every page was rewritten for readability: opening framing, tighter prose, and skimmable structure.
- A new Strategic hypotheses page explains how to work backwards from outcomes.
- Pages show their status and last-updated date, and readers and AI tools can use machine-readable copies of the handbook.
- The decision guide is drawn left to right so it stays readable on phones.
